Saturday, November 28, 2015 is Small Business Saturday® – a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities. Our team at Portland District paired up and headed out on the town to chat with local business owners and shopkeepers about their familiarity with the Small Business Saturday phenomenon. #shopsmall #dinesmall #smallbizsat
“You mean Little Boxes?” was a common refrain here in Portland. Little Boxes is a free two day city-wide shopping event and raffle, with over 200 locally-owned shops and boutiques, on 11/27-28. Some business owners mentioned “Supportland” also as a common way they look to promote local shopping during the holidays and beyond. Scott Bossom (Lender Relations) seems pretty interested in the succulent counter at Flowers in Flight on NE Alberta.
|This is a creative time for shop owners to showcase their passion projects, and highlight the local vendors that contribute to their retail vision. At All for Paws in NW Portland, Kelli O’Connor shared with Yuri Dyson (Gov’t Contracting) that they will be hosting an SBS event with pet photo sessions, new products, and free SBS tote bags with purchase. Pet photo shoot? That sounds like it could get pretty silly or pretty sophisticated in short-order!||
Melissa Davis (District Support) stopped in at Land Gallery, and at The Meadow on N. Mississippi, for an occasion to view the amazing display of specialty salt, bitters, chocolate, and flowers–and raise awareness about Small Business Saturday. You might be thinking, ‘well, all of these places sound great if I live in Portland’–but all across the state small businesses and chambers are banding together to promote local buying.
Our friends and colleagues at the Oregon Small Business Development Center Network shared about these Small Business Saturday goings-on, near and far:
On Plaid Friday, 11/27, the Astoria Downtown Historic Association will be kicking off the Discover Downtown Astoria Scavenger Hunt to get people downtown and exploring the great variety of shops. Fill your passport by 12/31, to join the raffle for prizes.
In Baker City, businesses will host their holiday open houses–which in the past has included a horse-drawn trolley to give rides up and down the shopping district! Will the trolley be back in this year?
What will you find in North Bend? Well, for starters: Medical Outfitters, Get Wet Scuba and Aquasports, and Laserzone, Ltd, are among those featuring SmallBizSat promotions.
If you are in Pendleton, get ready for the Small Business Saturday BizBlitz, where local companies will offer special discounts and prizes on Saturday, 11/28!
And, in Tillamook, over 25 participating businesses will be taking part in a passport promotion that the local SBDC is sponsoring. If validated by 8 stores between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m on Saturday, shoppers can submit their passport to be entered in drawings for prizes donated by the participating establishments.
