Food for the Poor, International’s Director of Mission and Travel, Jamaican-born Leann Chong, was pulled from under rubble that buried her alive for 18 hours at Hotel Montana.
After she was rescued by UN workers, Ms. Chong was airlifted to a hospital in Santiago, Dominican Republic where she is now receiving treatment for spinal injuries.
“She is receiving excellent care and we are waiting for the DR to release her so that we can have her airlifted back to the US Hospital for treatment, She is in good spirits and should be ok,” reported Robin G. Mahfood, President/CEO, Food for the Poor, Inc.
Also, the organisation’s Director of International Partnerships, Joe Serra, was rescued and flown to the Dominican Republic, and is scheduled to arrive in the USA today at 4 p.m.
According to reports coming out the FFP Florida-based headquarters, 11 Lynn University Students (USA), who were on a mission in Haiti, have been accounted for at the US Embassy there.
“We have one student and two faculty members that have not yet been located,” according to Mr. Mahfood. “One of the students was airlifted to the DR Hospital for treatment. Please continue to pray for them that all will be found.”
Earlier today, a four-member creative team of writers, photographer and videographer was reported to have arrived safely in Haiti to document carnage.
Food for the Poor’s Executive Director of the Haitian mission, Mrs. Kareen Dolce, and Beth Carroll, who weren’t in the island at the time of the quake, have since returned via Helicopter and they will be reopening FFP Haiti and getting organized with disbursements and operations.
“We have massive amount of Aid organized to arrive Haiti as soon as the ports are open(ed) up. We have on wharf in Haiti 49 containers of Food, Medical supplies, Clothing. And 35 containers are on way and will arrive this week,” said Mahfood, who added that another 287 containers of aid were also waiting to go into Haiti.
