PAJ Mourns Passing of Wycliffe Bennett!

The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) mourns the passing of veteran broadcaster and theatre icon Wycliffe Bennett, who passed away this afternoon (October 5) in the University Hospital of the West Indies after a long illness at the age of 87.

Bennett was a former general manager of the now defunct Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), where he mentored generations of media practitioners, many of whom who are still practicing today. After leaving JBC, Mr Bennett became the chairman and chief executive officer of the Creative Production and Training Centre, where he imparted valuable skills to media and theatre practitioners. Reacting to Bennett’s death, former JBC employee Dr Hopeton Dunn said he was “saddened by the passing of a wonderful Jamaican as well as a great broadcaster, cultural icon, scholar and outstanding television producer-director.” Dunn, who is chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica, noted that Bennett helped to bring the Jamaica Festival movement into being, as well as helped to found many of the country’s artistic and creative institutions, while fashioning others into effective institutions. The PAJ expresses condolences to Mr Bennett’s family and relatives during their grief.
