The first race in the Burger King / Jamdammers 5 Race Grand Prix Series kicks off this Sunday, September 13 with the Ministry of Health’s 5K in celebration of Caribbean Wellness Day.The road race series which will be mounted in Kingston, St Catherine, Clarendon, St James and St. Elizabeth will see 2008 champions Kemoy Campbell of Bellefield and G.C. Foster College’s Arieta Martin defending their titles. According to Race Director Alfred “Frano” Francis a total prize purse of J $346,000.00 awaits the winners in the various categories. “Entrants will be able to compete in the under 35 age group, the Masters or over 35 and student categories,” says Francis. In commenting on the series Marketing Manager of Restaurant Associates Limited franchise holders of Burger King, Dianna Blake-Bennett says, “This year the focus will be on Montego Bay, with Burger King stamping ownership on road racing in that part of the island through the “Burger King Mobay 10K”, on October 11. The fact that Montego Bay is the island’s tourism mecca presents the opportunity for a perfect marriage of sports and tourism as we look forward to working to further position Jamaica as the newest and best sports destination in the world. Burger King is already a strong supporter of Jamaica’s national athletic teams and we continue to be committed to the development of athletics in Jamaica. We anticipate another successful road race series and urge the support of all the communities in which the various events will be held.” The aim of the road race series is to develop and promote log distance running in Jamaica and prepare athletes to compete in the annual Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K event which will be held in Negril on Saturday, December 5 this year.
